HISTORY
Cobb’s Battery
Cobb’s Battery, a highly decorated Confederate artillery unit, was formed as the Kentucky 1st Artillery in the spring of 1861 by Captain H.B. Lyon in Lyon County at Mint Springs (now Kuttawa, KY) Cobb moved the unit to Tennessee and turned command over to Captain Robert Cobb. The Battery suffered a high number of casualties at Shiloh and later merged into the famous Orphan Brigade.
Battle of Saratoga
Very early in the war, a group newly recruited Confederate cavalrymen were routed by a surprise attack from Union forces stationed in Paducah. The rebels, mostly local men, were in training at Saratoga Springs, about five miles east of Eddyville. The engagement lasted about 30 minutes. Over 150 years later, visitors still come to see the musket ball hole preserved on the north side of Saratoga United Methodist Church.
Battle of Eddyville
On April 25, the last large skirmish of the War Between the States in Kentucky, that has been documented occurred along the banks of the Cumberland River in Eddyville. This engagement occurred twenty days after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and the 149 Confederate troops were, most likely headed home, and not looking for fight from the Yankee’s garrisoned at Eddyville.
Lyon County is always proud to welcome home Cobb’s Battery reenactors and commemorate these historic events. Join us in April for a living history presentation.
